Position Summary
The Senior Underwriter is an experienced credit professional responsible for independently underwriting a broad range of commercial credit requests, including C&I and CRE transactions. This role delivers timely, thorough, and well-structured credit analyses that support sound lending decisions, consistent risk evaluation, and adherence to the bank’s credit policies.
This role serves as a key credit resource within the Commercial Banking team, partnering closely with Relationship Managers, Credit Officers, and senior leadership to support high-quality loan originations while maintaining strong asset quality.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Analysis & Underwriting Execution
Independently prepare credit memos, financial analyses, and risk assessments for a variety of commercial loan types
Apply underwriting standards consistently across all commercial loan requests
Produce high-quality, well-documented credit packages that are ready for approval
Commercial Credit Expertise
Underwrite across a wide range of commercial lending products, including:
Commercial & Industrial (C&I)
Commercial Real Estate (CRE), including income-producing and construction loans
Risk Management & Credit Quality
Owner-occupied real estate and specialized lending structures
Analyze complex transactions, including multi-entity borrowers and layered capital structures
Risk Management & Credit Quality
Ensure sound risk assessment, including thorough analysis of cash flow, collateral, guarantor strength, and industry trends
Monitor portfolio trends and identify emerging risks
Maintain adherence to internal risk rating systems and credit policies
Workflow & Efficiency
Manage personal underwriting pipeline to meet turnaround expectations and service level commitments
Proactively identify opportunities to improve the quality and efficiency of credit packages
Adhere to and help promote best practices and standardization across the underwriting function
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner closely with Relationship Managers to structure deals and provide credit guidance
Coordinate with Credit Officers and senior leadership on complex approvals and policy interpretation
Collaborate with loan operations, documentation, and risk teams
Regulatory Compliance & Governance
Ensure all underwriting activities comply with regulatory requirements and internal policies
Support internal and external audits, loan reviews, and examinations
Maintain thorough documentation and audit-ready processes
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field
5–8+ years of commercial credit underwriting experience
Experience mentoring or providing guidance to junior underwriters or analysts a plus
Strong knowledge of commercial lending, including C&I and CRE
Proven ability to analyze complex financial structures and transactions
Preferred Skills
Advanced financial analysis and modeling capabilities
Strong understanding of credit policy, risk rating systems, and regulatory expectations
Experience with construction lending and complex CRE transactions
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly articulate credit decisions and risk positions
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
