POSITION OVERVIEW
The Portfolio Manager – Commercial Banking is a core credit role responsible for the origination support, underwriting, structuring, and ongoing management of commercial and industrial (C&I) loan relationships. This individual works across a broad range of operating businesses, managing credit facilities that support working capital, equipment acquisition, business expansion, owner-occupied real estate, and other general corporate purposes.
The role partners closely with Relationship Managers, the Chief Lending Officer, and credit administration to grow and maintain a high-quality C&I portfolio. The ideal candidate combines rigorous analytical skills with strong business acumen and a genuine interest in understanding how companies operate, compete, and generate cash flow across a diverse array of industries.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Portfolio Management & Credit Administration
Manage the full credit lifecycle for a portfolio of C&I borrowers, including initial underwriting, approval, documentation, booking, and ongoing annual review.
Conduct thorough financial analysis including income statement spreading, balance sheet assessment, cash flow modeling, working capital analysis, and debt service coverage calculations.
Prepare detailed credit memoranda and risk narratives for presentation to senior credit officers and loan committee.
Monitor portfolio performance through periodic financial statement reviews, covenant tracking, borrowing base certificate administration, and borrower site visits as appropriate.
Manage renewals, modifications, amendments, and extensions on existing credit facilities within established policy parameters and timelines.
Maintain accurate, complete, and current loan files in compliance with bank policy and regulatory expectations.
Credit Analysis & Underwriting
Underwrite a broad range of C&I credit products including revolving lines of credit, term loans, asset-based lending facilities, equipment financing, letters of credit, and owner-occupied commercial real estate.
Assess borrower repayment capacity through both historical and projected cash flow analysis, with appropriate sensitivity testing and stress scenarios.
Evaluate collateral positions including accounts receivable, inventory, equipment, and real estate; understand advance rates, advance formulas, and collateral monitoring requirements for asset-based structures.
Analyze industry dynamics, competitive positioning, management depth, and business risk alongside financial metrics to develop a complete credit picture.
Structure credit facilities with appropriate covenants, reporting requirements, collateral controls, and pricing to balance borrower needs with bank risk appetite.
Identify, articulate, and mitigate key credit risks within each transaction, presenting a balanced and well-supported recommendation to credit decision makers.
Business Development Support & Relationship Management
Collaborate with Relationship Managers on prospect calling, proposal development, and term sheet preparation to support new business generation.
Participate in borrower meetings, site visits, and introductory calls to build direct relationships with business owners, CFOs, and key financial decision makers.
Support cross-sell efforts by identifying opportunities to deepen relationships through treasury management, deposit products, interest rate risk management tools, and other bank services.
Serve as a responsive and knowledgeable point of contact for existing borrowers on credit-related questions, covenant inquiries, and facility management matters.
Risk Management & Compliance
Ensure all credits are underwritten, structured, and documented in accordance with the bank’s credit policy, loan policy guidelines, and applicable regulatory standards.
Identify early warning signs of credit deterioration and proactively communicate concerns to credit administration and relationship leadership.
Support the bank’s classified asset management process for any portfolio credits that migrate to watch, special mention, or classified status.
Assist with internal loan review, credit exam preparation, and responses to regulatory or auditor findings as needed.
Maintain working knowledge of relevant banking regulations including FDIC, OCC, and Federal Reserve guidance applicable to commercial lending.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Three to seven years of commercial banking experience with direct responsibility for C&I loan underwriting and portfolio management.
Formal credit training or analyst program background at a commercial bank, regional bank, or business development company strongly preferred.
Strong financial statement analysis skills with demonstrated ability to spread, model, and interpret complex business financials across multiple industries.
Working knowledge of asset-based lending structures, borrowing base mechanics, and collateral monitoring is a meaningful plus.
Experience managing a performing commercial portfolio, including covenant administration, annual reviews, and proactive borrower communication.
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field required; MBA or advanced degree a plus.
Strong written communication skills with the ability to craft well-organized, concise, and persuasive credit memoranda.
Proficient in financial spreading software (Moody’s, Sageworks, or similar) and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
