Position Summary
The Director of Commercial Lending is responsible for leading and expanding the bank’s Commercial Banking portfolio within the Denver market. This role drives loan and deposit growth across Commercial & Industrial (C&I) and Commercial Real Estate (CRE) segments, while maintaining strong credit quality and risk discipline.
The Director provides strategic leadership, manages a team of Relationship Managers, and actively participates in business development efforts. This individual plays a key role in shaping market strategy, structuring complex transactions, and strengthening the bank’s presence within the local commercial community.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Lending Leadership
Lead and oversee the Commercial Lending function, including C&I and CRE production
Establish and execute strategies to drive loan growth, deposit generation, and overall profitability
Ensure alignment with the bank’s broader Commercial Banking objectives
Business Development & Market Expansion
Drive new business development efforts, targeting middle-market and emerging commercial clients
Maintain an active presence in the Denver business community and develop key referral sources (CPAs, attorneys, brokers, sponsors)
Personally originate and structure complex lending opportunities
Team Leadership & Performance Management
Recruit, lead, and develop a high-performing team of Commercial Relationship Managers
Set production goals and hold team members accountable for performance
Foster a strong sales culture focused on relationship growth and client service
Credit Oversight & Risk Management
Provide leadership in credit structuring, underwriting guidance, and deal approval processes
Ensure adherence to credit policies, risk rating standards, and regulatory requirements
Monitor portfolio quality and proactively manage credit risk
Portfolio & Relationship Management
Oversee a portfolio of commercial clients, ensuring strong asset quality and client retention
Support team members in managing complex relationships and transactions
Address problem credits and develop appropriate action plans
Cross-Sell & Product Integration
Promote a full-service Commercial Banking approach, including treasury management, deposits, and capital markets solutions
Partner with internal teams to deliver comprehensive financial solutions
Financial Performance & Reporting
Manage market-level performance, including loan growth, deposit balances, and fee income
Track key performance metrics and provide reporting to senior leadership
Oversee budgeting and resource allocation within the lending function
Community & Industry Engagement
Represent the bank in the Denver market through active participation in industry and community organizations
Enhance the bank’s brand as a leading Commercial Banking provider
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, or related field (MBA preferred)
10–15+ years of experience in Commercial Banking, with a strong focus on lending
Proven leadership experience managing commercial lending teams
Demonstrated success in business development and portfolio growth
Strong credit acumen, including experience with complex C&I and CRE transactions
Preferred Skills
Established network within the Denver commercial market
Deep expertise in C&I and/or CRE lending
Strong leadership, coaching, and team development capabilities
Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills
