About the Role

A Commercial Leader at a bank is typically responsible for overseeing and growing the commercial banking segment, which involves providing financial services to business clients (as opposed to individual consumers). Their role is both strategic and operational, often including leadership over teams like relationship managers, credit analysts, and product specialists.

Here’s a breakdown of what they typically do:

1. Client Relationship & Growth Strategy

  • Develop and execute strategies to attract, grow, and retain business banking clients (small to large enterprises).

  • Build high-value relationships with C-level executives, CFOs, and business owners.

  • Identify opportunities to cross-sell or upsell services like loans, treasury management, commercial real estate financing, etc.

 2. Team Leadership & Sales Management

  • Lead and coach commercial bankers/relationship managers.

  • Set and manage performance targets (e.g., revenue growth, loan volume, deposit acquisition).

  • Foster collaboration between departments—credit, operations, risk, etc.—to serve clients more effectively.

 3. Risk & Credit Oversight

  • Oversee credit quality and lending practices, ensuring deals align with bank policy and risk tolerance.

  • Work with credit officers to structure deals and mitigate risk.

4. Product & Market Development

  • Shape the commercial product offering—like cash management, lines of credit, equipment finance, etc.

  • Stay current on market trends and client needs, and adapt offerings accordingly.

5. Executive Reporting & Strategy Alignment

  • Report to senior bank executives on portfolio performance, client acquisition, and market expansion.

  • Help shape the bank’s long-term commercial strategy and expansion into new markets or industries.
